King County Housing Authority broke ground Friday on the $18 million Vantage Point apartment complex in Renton’s North Benson neighborhood.

Beech Street Apartments and Center for Hope and Recovery
O’Neill/Walsh Community Builders recently completed work on an $18 million substance abuse treatment center and affordable substance-free housing facility in Northeast Portland.

Pacific University Washburne Hall Renovations
Pacific University, with the assistance of longtime food service provider Aramark, will refresh the Washburne University Center and expand offerings in time for the 2014 fall semester. Design and construction of the project is a partnership between Portland-based firms Opsis Architecture, inici Group, Inc. and Walsh Construction Co.

LifeWorks NW Treatment Center and Beech St. Apartments to Open
Lifeworks NW, which provides treatment for mental health issues and addiction, will open The Center for Hope and Recovery at 3650 N.E. Mallory Ave. The center includes Lifeworks NW’s 36-bed project network and the 32-unit Home Forward Beech Street Apartments.

A Study of Alternative Construction Methods in the Pacific Northwest
Building a residential tower with cross laminated timber could be slightly cheaper than a comparable concrete structure, according to a recent study by three Pacific Northwest firms.
Mahlum Architects, Walsh Construction and Seattle-based structural engineering firm Coughlin Porter Lundeen teamed up for “A Study of Alternative Construction Methods in the Pacific Northwest.” The feasibility study, released in May, examines the cost competitiveness of cross laminated timber versus more traditional building materials for a 10-story residential building.

Orchards at Orenco: Largest Passive House Affordable Multi-Family Project
REACH Community Development continues its affordable home-building program with the launch of its Orchards at Orenco project this month at Hillsboro’s Orenco Station.
REACH, a nonprofit with nearly 1,900 units of affordable housing, is beginning construction of the 57-unit first phase of Orchards at Orenco, a three-building complex that will eventually provide about 150 units affordable housing.]
