Construction is Underway at OSU Cascade Campus

Construction is well underway on the 85,000-square-foot residential hall for Oregon State University’s Cascade Campus in Bend which is scheduled to be ready for students and faculty by Winter 2016.

OSU-Cascades purchased land to create a 10-acre campus located near the center of Bend and close to transportation and other amenities. The campus will have classrooms, administrative offices and student housing. The 10-acre campus and the nearby Graduate & Research Center together are the first step in building a sustainable campus that is fully integrated with the community while retaining the personal, close-knit environment that has worked so well for OSU students.

WALSH Quality Director, Marty Houston, presented “Mid Rise Wood Buildings: A U.S. Builder’s Perspective” at a workshop hosted by the HPO, Canadian Wood Council, FPInnovations and Forestry Innovation Investment in Vancouver, BC.

The workshop was an excellent forum to share information related to the design, planning and construction of mid-rise wood buildings in British Columbia. With an impressive line-up of speakers, topics ranged from fire safety design to the Building Act to how mid-rise wood frame construction provides an alternative in delivering quality and affordable housing.

The HPO was pleased to coordinate this successful educational event, along with presenting partners, The Canadian Wood Council, FPInnovations and Forestry Innovation Investment. The day helped to strengthen industry partnerships and to enhance the quality of residential construction in British Columbia.

O’Neill/Walsh Community Builders (OWCB) is honored by the City of Portland for their efforts in supporting equity in the workforce.

O’Neill/Walsh Community Builders (OWCB) was honored by the City of Portland “for their efforts in supporting equity in workforce and contracting on City, Portland Housing Bureau and PDC projects”. OWCB was among eight contractors recognized during the City Council meeting, with awards presented by Mayor Charlie Hales and the City Council.

OWCB, created in August 2011, is a formal partnership between O’Neill, Inc., a registered MWESB firm, and Walsh Construction Co. The partnership co-exists with its parent companies, builds on both companies’ strengths, facilitates opportunities to connect more deeply with MWESB firms, and provides O’Neill more exposure to processes and procedures for success on larger projects. Since its inception, OWCB has completed five projects, and has three in preconstruction.

OWCB earned the recognition for their efforts on the Beech Street Apartments/Center for Hope & Recovery project, which includes Lifeworks NW’s 36-bed Project Network and the 32-unit Home Forward Beech Street Apartments. OWCB served as general contractor on the two buildings, which were designed by Holst Architecture.

WALSH Seattle builds two homes for homeless families in the Tiny House Village in SE Seattle.

Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), a client that WALSH Seattle has worked with for many years, approached John Gilson to see if WALSH would build two homes for the new Tiny House Village in SE Seattle. The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and LIHI have partnered with Nickelsville to provide 15 tiny homes for homeless families before Christmas, 2015. Nickelsville is a multi-site homeless encampment consisting of tents and tiny houses throughout Seattle.

Historic Hotel Julian Receives Restore Oregon’s DeMuro Award

Last Friday evening at Restore Oregon’s annual “Restoration Celebration” in Portland, the Hotel Julian was one of seven historic rehabilitation projects in Oregon to receive the DeMuro Award for “projects exemplifying excellence in preservation, adaptive reuse, and community revitalization.” The award is “the only state-wide award in Oregon recognizing the creativity, persistence, and craftsmanship required by outstanding restoration projects.”

In recognizing the Hotel Julian, Restore Oregon said: “The 1892 hotel had become run-down Section 8 housing, but was restored to a state of grace and dignity for its residents and neighbors, demonstrating that preservation can serve the under-served.”

Framework: First Tall Timber Project in Portland

“A key element of the building design led by Thomas Robinson, principal of LEVER Architecture, is to communicate at street level the project’s innovative use of wood and engineering technology in the development of a high rise structure, along with its relationship to the rural economy. Integrating lessons learned from tall timber structures in Canada and Europe, Robinson and his team are expected to incorporate new structural and architectural technologies that include an engineered wood core and lateral system for seismic integrity and CLT floor panels fabricated up to 50’ in length.”

The proposed building will be a 12-story wood framed building constructed primarily with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) components for the floors and the lateral force resisting system (LFRS), in conjunction with Glue Laminated Beams (GLB) and Glue Laminated Columns (GLC). The super structure will be supported on a conventionally reinforced mat foundation.
